My Y Story – Julie
Julie learned to hate crowds, rules, and closed-in spaces due to her war-torn childhood. Born in a Japanese-occupied island prison during World War II, she has overcome struggles that only few could relate. After finding a career in education, she enjoyed outdoor recreational activities with friends and kept busy with her church. Suddenly, her husband fell terribly ill and could no longer care for himself. With no local family, Julie was the sole caregiver to her sick spouse. She eventually withdrew from society completely, as both she and her husband became isolated in utter despair. The stress of tending to his mental, emotional, and physical devastation all alone became unbearable. A close friend noticed the toll Julie’s situation was taking on her mental and physical health, and begged Julie to join her at the YMCA for some relief. Julie connected with South YMCA staff and discovered she could afford an income-based membership through the Membership For All Program.
Julie found a new home at the Y. She is now linked to countless people who welcome her wholeheartedly and truly care for her wellbeing. In getting back on her feet with the Y’s help, Julie was able to settle her husband in a professional care facility and regain her active lifestyle. The YMCA community has rescued Julie from her darkest time.
