My Y Story – Lauri
I have been involved with the YMCA since 1983 as a volunteer, camp staffer, program director and as a member. The Y has been an important part of my life for years. But 10 years ago, I went through breast cancer, and the Spokane Valley YMCA became my lifeline. The encouragement from the staff, the care of the members, and the welcoming atmosphere were essential to my recovery.
During that time, my husband, a disabled veteran, completely lost his ability to work. We were struggling financially and were going to have to give up our Y membership. Thankfully, we learned about the Y’s Membership For All program.
We were set up with a payment that we could afford comfortably until we were back on our feet. We now give each year to the Annual Campaign so that others may have their lives changed by the Y just as we have.
